Abstract

Blood is the tissue of life and the metabolism of cells in the blood continues as blood is sent to the laboratory. Rapid examination is important because it will not only suppress preanalytic errors due to the effects of blood cell metabolism in the sample, storage of specimens in a place containing ice will cause low temperatures and may decrease the blood cell metabolism that may alter the pH, PCO2, PO2 and HCO3- values. The objective of the study was to determine the difference of blood gases immediately and to be stored using ice. The sample of this study were IGD patients with complaints of shortness of breath at Gunung Jati Hospital. The analysis used is paired different test. The results of the calculations of both the immediate and stored samples in ice temperature with normal pH criteria, PCO2 and HCO3- below normal limits are expressed in fully-compensated metabolic acidosis. Different test results of blood gas examination was soon known to pH got the average value of 7.45 for PCO2 got the average value of 27.86 mmHg and for HCO3- obtained a mean value of 20.25 mmol/L and blood gas examination after being stored in ice temperature known for pH obtained average value of 7,43 for PCO2 got the mean value equal to 28,22 mmHg and for HCO3- got the mean value equal to 20,3 mmol/L. Blood gas examination at sample immediately and in the test indicated at pH and PCO2 and HCO3- stated there is a significant difference. Keywords: Blood gas, pH, PCO2, HCO3-.
