Abstract
Anxiety in patients’ family is the anxiety arises when one of the family members becomes a patient at hospital. The anxiety develops as the effect of the role change, routine disturbance, and the strange environment of hospital. Intensive care unit is the room used by patients in critical stage where the family may feel more anxious. The anxiety of patients’ family may stimulate psychological distress which leads to inconvenience and even panicking. That’s not good for the family’s psychological state. Therapeutic communication is expected to reduce the anxiety as the interaction between family and nurses is able to facility the need to share knowledge, feeling, and information to combat the anxiety. The researcher was interested to find out more about the correlation between nurses’ therapeutic communication and anxiety level of family from patients with mechanical ventilation at ICU of RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang. It was quantitative non experimental research with descriptive correlation design. 30 respondents were taken as sample using consecutive sampling technique. Therapeutic communication questionnaire and Hamilton Anxiety Ratting Scale (HARS) were used as the instruments in data collection. The research showed that 16 respondents (53.3%) obtained proper therapeutic communication, while 12 respondents went through mild anxiety (40.0%) and 9 respondents went through severe anxiety (20.0%). The result of statistical test using Spearman Rank gained p value = 0.983 (p>0.05) with correlative coefficient was r (-) 0.004. It showed that there was no correlation between nurses’ therapeutic communication and anxiety level of family from patients with mechanical ventilation at ICU of RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang.
