Abstract

Introduction: Neonatal resuscitation is one efforts conducted to prolong newborn life and prevent residual symptoms that may arise.Nurse in charge in the NICU room has significant role in the success of resuscitation, thus it is important for them to master neonatal resuscitation skill, such as measuring emergency, freeing the airways, providing positive pressure ventilation, giving chest compression, and injecting epinephrine intravenously. Aim: To describe nurse skill mastery in implementing resuscitation to newborn in NICU room of RSUP Dr. Kariadi Semarang. Method: This study is conducted for 2 months in NICU room of RSUP. Dr. Kariadi Semarang, employing descriptive qualitative method with 24 nurses as respondents using saturation sampling technique. Result: The result shows that 12 nurses (50%) are skillful in measuring emergency, 12 nurses (50%) are skillful in freeing airways, 12 nurses (50 %) are skillful in giving positive pressure ventilation, 12 nurses (50%) are skillful in performing chest compression, and 15 nurses (67,%) are skillful injecting epinephrine intravenously. Conclusion: It is shown that nurses skill in performing resuscitation in newborns in NICU room of RSUP. Dr. Kariadi are regarded as very skillful. They have sufficient skill to measure emergency, free the airways, giving chest compression, and injecting epinephrine intravenously.There is only one skill which is not well-mastered by the nurse, such as providing positive pressure ventilation. Suggestion: It is expected that nurses in NICU room need to continuously improve their skills related in performing neonatal resuscitation by actively joining to such program, workshop or seminar.
