Abstract

On of the daily activities in maintaining a healthy body is by sanitizing the skin. The example of skin sanitizing is by taking care of the hygiene of hands, because hands are the source of the transmission of germs which can cause illnesses. Antiseptic liquid (hand sanitizer) is a hand sanitizing product in the form of gel which contains antiseptic agent and used to wash the hands without rinsing it with water. The objective of this research is to find out the total bacteria on the palm of the hands before and after using antiseptic liquid. The samples are examined using the method of bacterial Total Plate Count. Based on the examination result, it appears that the amount of germs before and after using antiseptic liquid is reduced. The average result of the bacterial amount on the palm of the right hand before washing hands using antiseptic liquid is 4,7x108 CFU/mL, meanwhile after using the antiseptic liquid, the average result is 6,0x107 CFU/mL. On the palm of the left hand, before using antiseptic liquid, the average result is 3,8x108 CFU/mL, and after using the antiseptic liquid, the average result changes to 5,0x107 CFU/mL. It shows that washing hands using antiseptic liquid can reduce the total bacteria as big as 87%. Key words : Total bacteria, Antiseptic liquid
