Abstract

Background: Efficient and environmentally friendly waste management, namely composting. This research was conducted by adding local microorganisms from coconut pulp, banana peel, and water hyacinth as activators in the composting process. This type of research is true experiment with the aim to determine the difference in the time of composting of organic waste based on variations in the types of local microorganisms. Method: Each type of waste weight treatment is 2 kg with the addition of local microorganisms coconut pulp, banana peel, and water hyacinth as much as 40 ml in each treatment. The composting time is calculated based on the physical characteristics of shrinkage by 60% of the initial weight. Results: The study showed pH 7 in all treatment groups. The temperature corresponds to the composting process ranging from 28-36˚C. The highest temperature is 36˚C and the lowest temperature is 31.8˚C occurs in moles of water hyacinth. Heavy shrinkage of compost has decreased by 60% from the initial weight. The smell of compost in all treatment groups was odorless, only in the control group that still smelled. The color of compost in the brownish treatment group, the control group is blackish brown. Compost texture for all experiments does not resemble soil. The average composting time is a minimum of 10.8, while the maximum average is 19.1 days. Conclusion: One Way Anova statistical test concluded that there was a difference in composting time based on variations in the types of local microorganisms (p value = 0.000).
