Abstract
Background: Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium Leprae. These bacteria can attack the peripheral nerves, skin and other body parts. Tropical and subtropical regions are leprosy endemic areas. WHO in 2015 enunciated that the Asian continent has the highest number of leprosy sufferers in the world (117,451). This study aims to disclose the factors related to contact intensity, leprosy type, personal hygiene, house temperature, home air humidity, natural lighting in the house, and occupancy density with new emerging leprosy cases through examination of house contacts. Method: This study uses cross-sectional research methods. The research instruments are in the form of questionnaires and observation sheets. Data analysis used is a Chi-Square test to see risk estimation and calculation of Prevalence Ratio (RP). Results: The study shows that there was a significant correlation between contact intensity p = 0.035 (p <0.05), personal hygiene p = 0.042 (p <0.05) with the occurrence of new leprosy and no significant correlation between house temperature p = 1,000 (p> 0.05), home air humidity p = 1,000 (p> 0.05), natural lighting in the house p = 1,000 (p> 0.05), occupancy density p = 0.268 (p> 0.05) with the occurrence of new leprosy. Conclusions: contact intensity and personal hygiene have a significant correlation with new leprosy occurrence, while house temperature, home air humidity, natural lighting in the house, occupancy density have no correlation with the emergence of new leprosy. Keywords: the emergence of leprosy, the intensity of contact, personal hygiene, house contact
