Abstract
Background: Ship fumigators have a high risk of exposure to bromide ions because fumigation activity uses strong penetrating methyl bromide. This study was to determine the relationship between the frequency of fumigation, duration of exposure, concentration of methyl bromide, and adherence to the use of PPE in the presence of bromide ions in the vessel fumigator serum. Method: Quantitative, observational, cross sectional study design. A sample of 45 ship fumigators at Tanjung Emas Port in Semarang met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Fumigation frequency identification by questionnaire, methyl bromide concentration using secondary data, identification of exposure duration and compliance with PPE using observation during fumigation, detection of the presence of bromide ions by laboratory tests. Results: Based on statistic test, there was no correlation between fumigation frequency, exposure time, fumigant concentration of methyl bromide with the presence of bromide ions in vessel serum fumigator (p> 0.05). There is a relationship between adherence to PPE usage with the presence of bromide ions in a vessel serum fumigator (p = 0,000; pOR = 9,0; 95% CI = 1,418–57,117). Many shipbuilders in non-compliant categories use PPE because they take off PPE for a while to rest around the fumigation area, when fumigation is carried out. Conclusion: Compliance with the use of PPE related to the presence of bromide ions in the ship's serum fumigator, the researcher suggested that use of PPE completely and continuously until the fumigation is complete. Keywords: fumigation, bromide ion, compliance with PPE
