Abstract

Background: Liquid waste of tofu industry is generated from the process of making tofu that contains high organic matter. One of the organic ingredients is BOD. Based on the results of preliminary studies that have been carried out, the BOD level of liquid waste of tofu industry is 2240 mg / l, this value has exceeded the BOD level threshold value which is 150 mg/l. The liquid waste processing in tofu industry can be done with phytoremediation. Phytoremediation is the use of plants to absorb organic compounds found in waste. One of the plants used is Kiambang (Salvinia molesta). Method: The type of this study is True Experiment with pre-test post-test design andcontrol design as well. The object of this research is the liquid waste of tofu industry at Jomblang Village, Candisari Subdistrict. Variations in the residence time of Kiambang plants used are 2 days, 4 days, 6 days and 8 days. Five repetitions were carried out so that the number of observations was 25 samples consisting of 20 treatment samples and 5 control samples. Observations were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis statistical test. Result: BOD before treatment is 2180-2430 mg / l, while after treatment is 710-1980 mg / l which means it is still above the threshold value of 150 mg / l. The percentage decrease in BOD levels after treatment with Kiambang plants at 2 days residence time was 34,80%, at 4 days residence time was 49,31%, at 6 days residence time was 54,67%, at 8 days residence time was 61,08%. Conclusion: There is an effect of residence time in phytoremediation process with Kiambang plant on decreasing BOD levels. The residence time of the Kiambang plant is the most effective in reducing the levels of BOD in tofu industrial wastewater, which is 8 days. Keywords: Kiambang, BOD, liquid waste of tofu industry
