Abstract

Background: Liquid waste of tofu, if not treated properly will cause pollution to the environment. Phytoremediation is a waste treatment technique using plants that are effective and easy to apply. Lotus (Nymphaea Sp.) and Hidrilla (Hydrilla Verticillata) are known to reduce pollutant levels with their absorption ability. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of phytoremediation based on the type of plant (lotus and hydrilla) and the contact duration in reducing BOD levels in tofu wastewater. Method: The type of research used is Pure Experiment. The lotus and hydrilla were contacted with tofu waste water in a plastic bucket and observed for 3, 6, and 9 days and then calculated the decrease in BOD levels. Observations were analyzed using the Two Way Anova statistical test. Results: The average BOD level before treatment was 248.25 mg / l, after treatment was 242.56 mg / l and the average decrease was 2.28%. The type of plant did not affect the decrease in BOD levels (p-value = 0.284), the duration of contact had an effect on the decrease in BOD levels (p-value = 0.022), there was no interaction between plant types and contact time (p-value = 0.790). The highest percentage of BOD reduction using hydrilla plants at 9 days of contact time is 2.9%. Conclusion: There is an influence of the duration of contact on the decrease in BOD levels in tofu wastewater but there is no effect on the type of plant to decrease BOD levels and there is no interaction for both. Keywords: Lotus, hydrilla, decrease in BOD, waste of tofu
