Abstract

Most students still thought that English language was difficult. They often found it difficult to write in English because they were not confident in their ability and afraid to make some mistakes even though they had a lot of vocabularies. When they were asked to the task of writing, they were reluctant to do so. Looking at the reasons, the researcher helped their problems by implementing the methods of Explicit Instruction (EI) and Self-Directed Learning (SDL) to teach the students’ writing skill. Furthermore, this research was aimed to know the implementation of EI and SDL, know enhancement of students’ writing skill, and find out the students’ responses about the methods applied. The research was designed by using Experimental Research at IX of MTs N I Mranggen. In addition, the researcher used some techniques to collect the data which were observation, questionnaire, and tests. The tests result of students’ writing skill had significant enhancement, which showed the result of pre-test scores’ of experimental class was 51.14 and post test was 83.63. Meanwhile, the result of pre-test scores’ of control class was 49.24 and post test was 72.79. Moreover, the students became active and creative during writing for procedure text. They were also been able to write their idea and showed their excitement to learn English especially writing by using the method proposed. They enjoyed writing their idea about a topic given. They were not afraid if they wrote ungrammatically because they had known that the teacher would evaluate and give a correction.
