Abstract

Many foods with bright yellow color including is wet noodle raises concern about possibility to contain unsafe azo dye methanyl yellow. Therefore, it is necessary to identify azo dye methanyl yellow by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and determine its level by visible spectrophotometry. The purpose of this research was to analyse azo dye methanyl yellow on wet noodle sold at the Mranggen market of Demak district. The type of this research is descriptive experimental research. Wet noodle samples were taken by accidental sampling as 6 samples from 6 traders found at the Mranggen market. As many as 250 gram of each sample from 6 traders were checked for its methanyl yellow content with TLC and visible spectrophotometry. The results of this research showed that from 6 samples tested with TLC, one of them (code no. 3) positively contained azo dye methanyl yellow. The determination with visible spectrophotometry showed that the level of azo dye methanyl yellow in this sample was 2252,96 ppm. As conclusion, sample of wet noodle no. 3 did not conform with the decree of Health Minister of Indonesia No. 033 of 2012 for containing azo dye methanyl yellow, a dye which use in food has been banned.
