Abstract

Background: Based on the results of health service facility reports in 2016, infant deaths occurred in Semarang was 201 of 26,337 live births, so that the infant mortality rate(IMR) was obtained at 7.63 per 1,000 live births. (Semarang City Health Profile, 2016). Asphyxia is a significant cause of stillbirth and neonatal death. Besides that, asphyxia causes high mortality and often causes residual symptoms in the form of neurological abnormalities (Maryunani, 2009). Objective: To find out the causes of asphyxia at Roemani Muhammadiyah Hospital Semarang in 2018. Methods: This was quantitative descriptive research with a retrospective approach. The population and sample in this study were all infants who experienced asphyxia at Roemani Muhammadiyah Hospital in Semarang as many as 48 cases in January 2017 - January 2018. The sampling technique used by researchers was saturated samples. Results: The results showed that the asphyxial factors in Roemani Muhammadiyah Semarang Hospital were the infant which was 30 respondents (52%), maternal factorwas 22 respondents (38%), the lowest factor was the umbilical cord factor which was 6 respondents (10%). The maternal factor which was the highest factor causing asphyxia was pre-eclampsia as many as 9 respondents (41%), while the lowest factor was a severe infection, namely 3 respondents (14%). The baby factor which was the highest factor causing asphyxia was prematurity as many as 14 respondents (47%), while the lowest factor was the difficult delivery, namely 3 respondents (20%). The umbilical cord factor which was the highest factor causing the occurrence of asphyxia is the cord loop which had 6 respondents (100%). Conclusion: The maternal factor that is the highest factor causing asphyxia is pre-eclampsia. The baby factor which is the highest factor causing asphyxia is prematurity.
