Abstract

Introduction: Down syndrome is a abnormality chromosomal that causes limitations and delays in motoric development that children with Down syndrome increase the difficulty in improving oral and dental hygiene. This limitation causes children with Down syndrome require great support from parents while not all parents with children with Down Syndrome have knowledge about dental and oral care. Purpose: the relationship between the level of parental knowledge on the status of dental and oral hygiene in children with Down syndrome. Method: Analytical observations with cross sectional study. This research was carried out in SLB Negeri Semarang and SLP YPAC Semarang with 32 samples of Down Syndrome children through parents taken with total sampling technique. This research was conducted by conducting interviews with parents and checking the status of dental and oral hygiene in children with Down syndrome by OHIS examination. Results: The results of interviews and examinations on the status of dental and oral hygiene showed a moderate category. Rank spearman test results show a relationship between the two variables that is equal to 0,000 (p <0.05) which means that both variables are significant. Conclusion: There is a relationship between the level of parental knowledge with oral and dental hygiene status in children with Down syndrome.
