Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the effectiveness of Total Physical Response method and wordwall in teaching vocabulary to the eighth graders of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Semarang in the academic year 2016/2017. In addition, it is also to find out the implementation of of Total Physical Response and wordwall in teaching vocabulary. The method used in this study was the experimental study. The study involved two groups, experimental class and control class. The subjects of the study were eighth graders of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Semarang, class VIII A as control class and VIII B as experimental class. The sample were 21 students in VIII A class and 22 students in VIII B class. The research used 20 questions on the test and 10 items on questionnaire as the valid and reliable instruments for collectiong the data. The researcher also did the try out in the class VIII G of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Semarang to analyze validity, reability, distinguish capacity and difficulty level of the instruments. The results obtained from the data that had been processed in this research were not only the implementation of TPR (Total Physical Response) and Wordwall but also the effectiveness of that method in teaching vocabulary. The result of data analysis using t-test were 5.158893 at 5% significance level and t_table = 2.021. Based on these data indicated that the t-test was higher than t = table (5.158> 2.021). It indicated that the research hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the research hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of Total Physical Response and wordwall is very effective to teach vocabulary in grade VIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Semarang in Academic Year 2016/2017.
