Abstract
Patients with the end-stage of chronic kidney disease who undergoing hemodialysis must limit their fluid intake, to overcome the restriction of fluid intake that patients should do can caused complaints of thirst and dry mouth. Management the thirst that can do by the patients of chronic kidney disease such as with sucking ice cubes and gurgling. The purpose of this study was determine the effectiveness of sucking ice cubes and gurgling with drinking water toward the long time resisting the thirst of the patients who undergoing hemodialysis. The research in this study was experimental research in the 18 sample of patients chronic kidney disease who undergoing hemodialysis at RS Roemani Muhammadiyah Semarang. The result showed that the duration of time to resisting thirst in the group sucking ice cubes average 93 minutes and duration of time to resisting thirst in the group of gurgling with drinking water average 55 minutes. There was a difference in the length of time resisting the thirst after sucking ice cubes and gurgling with drinking water, that sucking ice cubes is more effective in long-lasting thirst compared to ripened water (ρ value 0.032 ≤ alpha 0.05). The recomendation of this research is expected that sucking ice cubes and gurgling with drinking water can be used to management the thirst of chronic kidney disease patients who undergoing hemodialysis.
