Abstract
The proper digestive track of neonates is noticed by the excretion of meconium as soon as the delivery process. If the meconium excretion takes more than 3 hours, it will lead to the bilirubin accumulation in the body. The bilirubin accumulation is marked by jaundice on the sclera, skin, and the total bilirubin in the blood > 5mg/dl. The research was aimed to find out the effect of early breastfeeding initiation toward physiologic hyperbilirubinemia in neonates. Quasi experimental research with posttest only was used as the research design. To measure the bilirubin value during the early breastfeeding initiation on newborn at Khadijah room of Muhammadiyah Kendal Islamic Hospital, 30 neonates with early breastfeeding initiation and 30 neonates without early breastfeeding initiation were taken as subject of the research using purposive sampling technique. The total bilirubin value in intervention group with early breastfeeding initiation was the average of 8,200 mg/dl(±3,0580), while the total bilirubin value in control group was 11,647mg/dl(±2,5857). Data analysis using Mann-Whitney Test showed the significant effect of early breastfeeding initiation toward physiologic hyperbilirubinemia cases in Muhammadiyah Kendal Islamic Hospital with ρ value = 0,000. The application of early breastfeeding initiation contributes to later success of breastfeeding, such the constant breastfeeding time which enables neonates to get colostrum earlier. Colostrum conatains natural laxative to stimulate the excretion of meconium. Meconium composed by residual substances and bilirubin. Therefore, early breastfeeding initiation may reduce the physiologic hyperbilirubinemia case. Keywords : Hyperbilirubinemia, Early Breasfeeding Initiation, Neonates. References : 23 (2004 - 2016)
