Abstract

Background : Leptospirosis is transmitted by Rattus norvegicus and Rattus tanezumi mice. The presence of mice in a residential environments influenced by physical, biological and behavioral factors. This research is to find out the factors that influence the density of rats and rat species found around leptospirosis cases. This research is an analytical research with cross sectional approach. Method : This cross sectional study had a sample of 75 houses taken from 25 houses around 3 cases of leptospirosis obtained by cluster sampling. Data retrieval is done by interviews and field observations. Results : 15 rats caught in the survey. The mean rat density is (6,67%). Species found were Rattus tanezumi (40%), Rattus exulans (26%), Rattus norvegicus (20%), Bandicota indica (7%), Bandicota bengalensis (7%). Availability of food sources (17.3%), clogged sewers (20%), physical condition of cement-based sewers (8%) and soil-based material (12%), the presence of open waste in the house ( 18.7%), frequency of trapping < 1 week (5.3%) and > 1 week (14.7%), rat predators (4%), rat feces (12%), piles of used goods (12%). Conclusion : there is a potential for leptospirosis transmission from all available samples because 9 houses found from 75 houses studied were Rattus norvegicus and Rattus tanezumi rats. Keywords: rat, leptospirosis, feed source, ditch, ditch physical condition, presence of trash, trapping, rat predators, rat feces, piles of used goods
