Abstract

Nitrite (NO2) is a compound derived from ammonia which is caused disturption of the oxygen (O2) binding process by haemoglobin which then forms methaemoglobin that is unable to bind oxygen (O2). One way to reduce levels of nitrite in the water is by using Coconut Shell Active Charcoal adsorbent since coconut shell has cellulose and lignin components. This study aims at setting the initial levels of nitrite, setting the levels of nitrite after soaking on 9%b/v ; 12% b/v ; 15% b/v ; 18% b/v ; and 21% b/v Coconut Shell Activated Charcoal, and calculating the decrease in the levels of nitrite percentage. The benefits of this research are to know the ability of coconut shell activated charcoal in decreasing nitrit level. The object of the research is the solution of nitrite at 10 ppm concentration, then levels of nitrite in water are lowered using Active Charcoal Coconut Shell at the concentration of 9%b/v ; 12% b/v ; 15% b/v ; 18% b/v ; dan 21% b/v. Levels of Nitrite are determined using spectrophotometric method with sulfanilic acid reagent and NED dihydrochloride as reacktor. This research was conducted in November 2016 to February 2017 in the Environmental Laboratory of BLH Semarang . The results of the study are Nitrite analysis was performed at optimal wavelength of 540 nm with 10 minutes stability. It was found that the initial Nitrite level was 9.5541 ppm and levels of nitrite after soaking with Coconut Shell Active Charcoal at the concentration 9%b/v ; 12% b/v ; 15% b/v ; 18% b/v ; and 21% b/v are 0.9607 ppm; 0.8190 ppm; 0.7670 ppm; 0.7652 ppm; and 0.7641 ppm respectively. There was an influence of variations in of active Coconut Shell Charcoal concentration of 9%b/v ; 12% b/v ; 15% b/v ; 18% b/v ; and 21% b/v with the decrease of of nitrite (NO2) levels. Keywords : Nitrite (NO2), Coconut Shell, Active Charcoal, Variation of Concentration
