Abstract

The study was aimed to find out to what extent the significant difference on students’ writing performance with the application of write around method and subtitled movie and know the responses of students grade XI MA Negeri Kota Tegal in the Academic Year 2016/2017. This research was an experimental research. In conducting the research, the researcher used two group designs. The population in this study were the students of grade XI MA Negeri Kota Tegal in the Academic Year 2016/2017. Two classes were selected as a sample of the research taken by simple random sampling technique. They were 35 students from grade XI IPA as experimental group, this group was group that contained students who were taught by using write around method and subtitled movie and other 33 students from class XI IPS as control group that was taught using conventional method. The researcher used writing tests in the form of essay and a questionnaire as research instruments. The researcher conducted a try out test to determine the validity, reliability, difficulty level, and distinguishing capacity of the instrument to 34 students of class XI Agama which was not a sample group, but has the same qualifications and capability as the sample. The test consisted of 10 items. From the calculation of validity, reliability, difficulty level, and distinguishing capacity, it could be seen that the research instrument was valid, reliable, had varying degrees of difficulty, and had enough distinguishing capacity categories. The data analysis was calculated using the t-test formula. Based on the calculation of the t-test, the t-value is 5.96231. At significance level of 5% and dk 66, it can be known t-table is 1.833. This shows that t-test was higher than t-table (5.96231> 1.833). The researcher made conclusion that the use of write around method and subtitled movie gave better writing result in grade XI MA Negeri Kota Tegal in Academic Year 2016/2017. The method and media could raise the students’ interest in learning. Based on the results of the research, the teachers are suggested to use the write around method and subtitled movie on the learning process of writing to improve students’ writing performance.
