Abstract

Introduction: Dental and oral health problems remain quite high, as reflected in the large number of people experiencing dental and oral disorders. The 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) showed that the most common complaint was cavities or dental caries. The primary cause of cavities is Streptococcus mutans, a Gram-positive bacterium. Bird's nests are known to have numerous benefits, including their potential antibacterial properties. Purpose: This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of swallow's nest extract (Collocalia fuciphaga) against Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Method: An in vitro laboratory experimental study with a post-test only control group design. The experiment was repeated four times based on the Federer formula. Extraction was carried out using the maceration method with 96% ethanol as a solvent, then dissolved in distilled water at concentrations of 50%, 60%, and 70%. Antibacterial testing was carried out using the well diffusion method using a petri dish. Result: The results of this study did not find any inhibition zones in the extract of swiftlet nest (Collocalia fuciphaga). This may be influenced by several factors. Conclusion: This study concluded that the extract of swiftlet nest (Collocalia fuciphaga) at concentrations of 50%, 60%, and 70% did not show antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans bacteria.
