Abstract

The Description of Perception and Attitude of Society Towards Child's Mental Retardation in Genting, Meteseh, Semarang. vii + 54 Pages + 2 Tables + 9 Attachments A child's mental retardation is a child with intellectual limitations that affect his daily behavioral abilities. The presence of a child's mental retardation within the society leads to diverse perceptions and attitudes. The objective of this study is to determine the description of perceptions, attitudes and expectations of the society toward child's mental retardation in Genting Hamlet, Village of Meteseh, Semarang. Research method used is qualitative research. The sample of this research is 5 (five) participants. Taking data using purposive sampling technique. The results of this study indicate that the community views the child's mental retardation as a child experiencing developmental delays and experiencing limitations in communicating. This resulted in the stigma in the society so that most people are disincline to talk to mentally retarded child because it is different from the others. However, there are also societies that provide social support for children with mental retardation such as allowing to come home and inviting them to speak. In despite of having limited intellectual ability, but the society hopes for the child's mental retardation to grow into a better child and can improve their socialization with the surrounding environment through education program.
