Abstract
Fever is an infection or inflammation caused by bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens that stimulate the release of endogenous pyrogens (interleukin, tumor necrosis factor, and interferon). The effects of fever on children include dehydration, lack of oxygen, and fever above 42ºC which can cause neurological. Children under 5 years old (toddlers) especially age 6 months to 3 years are at risk of febrile seizures. Fever is often accompanied by other symptoms such as headaches, decreased appetite, weakness and muscle aches. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the number of fever cases worldwide reaches 16-33 million with 500-600 thousand deaths each year. There are two nursing interventions to reduce fever, which are non-pharmacological therapy by giving warm compresses and onion compresses; both can be used for non-pharmacological therapy in reducing fever in children. This case study aims to find out the effectiveness of applying warm compresses and red onion compresses to a decrease in a child's body temperature with fever. This design of the study was descriptive study including patient profile, the study of fever in 4 patients when doing a warm compress and onion compress including 2 warm compresses and 2 onions compress. The subject of the study was children aged 1-5 years, patients with fever, and warm compresses and compresses onions were carried out. Based on the observation after warm compresses were carried out on 2 children and onion compresses on 2 children with an average temperature of 38.1ºC a decrease in the average warm compress was 1.1ºC while a decrease in red onion compresses was 1.35ºC so a significant decrease was found in compress onion. It can be concluded that there is an effect of onion compresses on decreasing fever in children. Keywords: Warm compress, onion compress, fever
