Abstract

Dextromethorphan is an over the counter drug which is used to reduce the symptoms of cough. Cheap and easily to getting it increases the incidence of abuse. Dextromethorphan abuse done by consuming them in large quantities. Recommended dosage of dextromethorphan is <120mg / day. Dextromethorphan is metabolized by liver which would turn it into a more active metabolite is dextorphan. In large quantities, dextorphan will be accumulated in the liver and causing liver damage. One of liver damage can be characterized by increasing levels of SGOT (serum glutamic oxaloasetic transaminase) in the serum. The purpose of this research is to determining SGOT levels in consuming dextromethorphan. The kind of research is descriptive which was held in January 2017. The samples of this reseach is total population of teenagers who consuming dextromethorphan and they live in Wahyu Temurun, Tlogosari, Semarang. It’s about 15 people. The sample was examined by kinetic method with normal values <35 U / L. The results showed that there were 8 respondents (53.33%) had normal SGOT levels, these respondents consumed dextrometrofan at least 10 drug grains per day in less than 1 year. As for the 7 respondents (46.67%) had high levels of SGOT, these respondents consumed dextromethorphan at least 20 drug grains per day within a period of more than 1 year.
