Abstract

This study aimed to know the quality of the textbooks used in SMA N 3 Demak based on six indicators or aspects proposed by Tok. In addition, the study also aimed to observe students' learning interest using the textbook during the teaching learning process. The method of the study was combined descriptive qualitative and quantitative method. Data were obtained from the rubric of textbook evaluation checklist, interview, and questionnaire. The object of the study in this research was a textbook which was used in SMA N 3 Demak grade X. The researcher used the rubric of six indicators which there were sub aspects from each indicator. The total numbers of sub aspects were 30. Furthermore, the researcher also used the interview and questionnaire to obtain the data to be more comprehensive. The number of interview was 10 questions, and the questionnaire was 10 statements. The results showed that the existence of the textbook could affect the students' learning interest. The students could become more active and got enthusiastic about the learning process in using the textbook. The data of the study showed that the quality of the textbook used in SMA N 3 Demak for grade X were good. The percentage of the textbook quality reached 76.56% and had good quality. In the questionnaire, total score of students’ response reached 2.70 and it could be said good. In addition, the result of interview showed that the students were enthusiastic when learning by using textbook, it could be used as to learn in the classroom and individual learning. Based on the result, the researcher believed that the textbook is a good media in teaching English to the students. The textbook had a good quality based on the six indicators, those are layout and design, activities, skills, language type, subject and content, and whole aspect or conclusion.
