Abstract

Dextrometorphan, an analogue synthetic opioid compound of codeine serving as a cough suppressants are often misused. Consumption exceeding the recommended dosage causes active metabolite of dextrometorphan, the dextrorphan, to be accumulated in the hepar that is highly potential to cause damage to hepar cells. Damage to hepar cells is characterized by an increased SGOT (Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transminase) and SGPT (Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase) in the blood. The SGPT is a more specific examination to hepar damage than SGOT since SGPT is easily found in hepatocytes. This study aims at determining the level of SGPT on teenagers who consume dextrometorphan. This study applies descriptive research. The population in this study is young as many as 20 who consume dextrometorphan and live or play in the region of Wahyu Temurun Tlogosari Semarang. The sample is in the form of venous blood serum taken from the total population of dextromethorphan user, then the sample of dextrometorphan users is examined using Diasys reagent with Sinnowa BS-3000p tool. The result of the study showed that seven teenagers consuming dextrometorphan for over 1 year experienced the increase of SGPT level. SGPT levels based on the dekstromethorphan amount of consumption, there are 8 respondents had normal ALT levels, and 7 other respondents have a value exceeding normal ALT levels. It shows that long-term and exceeding the dosage consumption of dextrometorphan causes damage of of hepar cells such as necrosis, parenkimatosa degeneration, and hydropic degeneration.
