Abstract

Hypoglycemia is an acute compilcation of diabetes mellitus characterized by a decrease in blood glucosa levels below normal ≤ 70 mg/ dL which should be treated promptly. This study aimed to explain the experience of diabetes mellitus patient in prevention and treatment of hypoglycemia in Sendang Mulyo urban Semarang. The research is a qualitative descriptive research with phenomenology approach to five primary participants who have hypoglycemia and five secondary participants. Data collection is done by in-depth interviews, dirrect observation, and focus group discussions. This study shows that the patient's experience in preventing hypoglycemic among others by eating regularly, using insulin properly, after using insulin directly to eat, while the patient experience in handling hypoglycemia include drinking sweet tea, diabet milk with honey, eating bananas, and taken to doctors and hospital. Recommendations from this study are expected to be input and education for patients with hypoglycemia. Keywords: Prevention, treatment, hypoglycemia, diabetes mellitus.
