Abstract
This research discussed about the use of student team achievement division (STAD) in teaching of narrative text. This research was to find out whether any significance difference on using STAD in teaching writing of narrative text. This research used quantitative approach with the experimental method. The researcher used pretest and posttest in experimental and control class. The population was the students of class eighth grade of SMP N 3 Semarang The samples were the students class VIII B and VIII D with the amount of 64 students. The researcher used simple random sampling in which VIII D as the experimetal group, and VIII B as the control group. The researcher also conducted try out to get the validity, difficulty level, and distinguising capacity. The research instruments used were test and questionnaire. The result of the test showed tarithmetic was greater than t_(table ) (3,713 >1.69389) so the hypothesis was accepted. The result posttest of experiment and control classes got average 82.81 and 76.18. While used SPSS in T-test got (0.00 <0.05) So, H1 was accepted. It meant there was a significant difference of students in writing narrative text between students who were taught writing using student team achievement division and those who were taught by conventional method. Meanwhile, the result of questionnaire or students’ motivation of experiment class and control class was 3.19 and 2.89 in category was good. It meant that the students’ motivation was good toward the use of student team achievement division or conventional method in writing narrative text. Then, the researcher suggests that the teacher should uses student team achievement division in teaching writing to improve students’ motivation in writing English narrative text.
